Male Breast Reduction is a surgical enhancement procedure that corrects gynecomastia, a condition where men have an excess of breast tissue. Gynecomastia is a medical term that comes from the Greek words for "women-like breasts." It is relatively common that young teenage men going through puberty will develop some growth of their breast tissue. Some men will have significant weight gain during this teenage period and this can make their breast growth more pronounced because their breast area is also made of fatty tissue. Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. There is no known cause for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or medical conditions.
Reasons for Considering a Male Breast Reduction:
The cause for this type of operation is when the hormonally sensitive breast tissue of a man, grows to a disturbing size for the man. Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast-reduction surgery.
General Procedure Breast reduction surgery is typically composed of one or two parts. If the male breast is mostly fatty tissue and little breast gland, then the male breast reduction is performed using liposuction. When the man's breast has a large amount of breast gland, he may require direct excision of the breast gland and in extreme cases removal of excess skin. It depends on the patient and their breast characteristics.
Recovery Process
Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Medication can be prescribed to relieve any pain caused by the procedure. The stitches will be removed shortly after the surgery depending on the procedure(s) involved. A support garment may need to be worn for several weeks after the surgery. Normal activities can generally be resumed within two weeks.
