While sometimes a beautiful attribute, hair can become an unsightly problem in the wrong areas. For many women, unwanted hair can be a nightmare. Getting rid of it can be painful. Until recently, the only choices we had for removing unwanted hair were smelly hair-removal creams, sharp razors, hot wax or painful electrolysis needles.

Today, advanced medical lasers and light systems provide the ultimate solution. This medical technology transcends the older, painful hair removal treatments and delivers longer lasting results. Now, even the men in our practice are pleased with the results made possible by our lasers. Thanks to new technology, hair from any part of your body, including the face, upper lip and chin, underarms, bikini area, legs, arms, chest, abdomen and back may be "lasered" to remove unwanted hair.

Here are a few of the most popular areas from which to have hair removed.

Everyone's hair grows differently, depending on age, weight, metabolism, hormones, ethnicity, medications, and other factors. But all hair goes through three distinct growth phases:

1) Active growth phase (anagen phase), which lasts up to several years. At any given time, the majority (85%) of our body hair is in this phase. During anagen, the hair has an abundance of melanin.

2) Regressive phase (catagen phase), which lasts about two weeks, during which the hair stops growing but is not yet shed. About 3-4% of our body hair is in this phase at any given time.

3) Resting phase (telogen phase), which lasts 5-6 weeks, at the end of which the hair falls out and a new hair begins to form. Approximately 10-13% of our body hair is in this phase at any one time.

Because hair reacts to light only during the active phase of its growth cycle (anagen), multiple treatments with the laser are always necessary. Usually four to six treatments are sufficient; however, your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth. Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism all play a part in your hair's location, thickness and resilience. The number of treatments you may require for optimal long-term benefits depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density and your hair's growth cycle. Most patients like us to treat until the hair is gone.
